For an amazing third time East Tennessee was treated to a spectacular display of the aurora Borealis. Initial expectations of just hoping to see some green colors below on the northern horizon picked up by a camera quickly gave away to naked-eye-visible reds and greens. Bright colors strengthening and fading, pillars, shifting, and moving in a slow dance that delighted the eyes. And while other senses weren’t as happy, say the fingers and toes in the nearly freezing windchills, overall it was awesome.
Awesome! Full of awe. Humbled as a creature to see the Creator’s playfulness and utter gratuitousness in giving us such a marvel to behold in this vast creation.
Mother and the formation group gathered for a brief portion of the show marveling at the bright reds to our north and northwest. Others took in views through windows and on porches near doors to warmth.
For now the third time we have experienced this rare wonder and yet there is still more. Another chance may happen again. Will we be looking? Absolutely. Will we be grateful even if it fails to materialize? Definitely. Can we believe all these amazing opportunities to admire the Heavens? Yes. Because we know the Maker and shouldn’t be surprised at his generosity. We don’t have to exist. Neither do aurora. But God wants to delight in both. Wow.
