Cor Jesu Monastery is located in rural East Tennessee and there is plenty of wildlife around, and domesticated animals as well. The deer have made it known that they are happy to permit us to continue to live here but are very clear that they were here first. At the top of the hill at Mater Dei house, the Sisters wage a quiet and hidden war against the various animals wanting to sample garden fare. But deeper in the woods down the hill at Cor Jesu the deer are very welcome to approach the building closely. They have been seen lying in the grass, browsing under the porch, and ambling up the driveway right next to the cars. We give them a wide berth, especially in tick season, but enjoy their simple beauty and gentle ways.
