While no one knows for sure the exact date of Our Blessed Mother’s birthday, celebrating her life as Jesus’ Mother goes back to ancient times and marking her Nativity liturgically goes back at least as far as the sixth century. Her birth can be considered the dawn of our salvation because she was the one who bore the Light of the World. She is the Mother of God. Any honor we pay to her derives from what we first owe to God alone. And, like a good mother, she always, always, points us to Jesus, her Son, rather than herself.
