Although the Handmaids of the Precious Blood have been praying and sacrificing for priests since their foundation in 1947, formal programs sharing this Handmaid charism with the outside world didn’t begin until the 1970s. It began first by encouraging other priests, religious and deacons to adopt a priest by name in 1974 which was the start of the Confraternity of Mary, Mother of Priests. Over 7,000 Confraternity Members have adopted priests since then.
Today, marks the 40th Anniversary of the association for spiritual adoption of priests that was an outgrowth of the Confraternity. The laity wanted to participate in the program so on the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, 11 Feb 1975, the Lay Associates of the Priesthood was begun. We are very pleased that, over a 40 year period, we have enrolled 30,177 Lay Associates of the Priesthood. Often, faithful Lay Associates would adopt several priests over the years so many more than 30,177 priests were adopted.
The program continues to this day and any practicing Catholic can simply click on our Adopt A Priest Button or the Adopt A Priest selection in the menu on every page of our website to enroll.
There are no meetings, fees, or dues. Just daily prayer for a specific priest.
If you would like to spiritually adopt a priest (or priests) through either of these programs, please send us your name and address using our Adopt A Priest contact form.
A priest somewhere in the world would like your prayers for him today…will you pray for him?
